One particular issue that has gained media prominence in recent weeks is that of police violence in the US, particularly against blacks. While not a new issue at all — the problem has been highlighted for several years now, and the racial discrimination associated with it is arguably as old as America itself — the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner at the hands of the police in highly controversial situations and their subsequent acquittal by grand juries have become a rallying point for those fed up with police brutality and the seeming impunity they enjoy despite such misbehaviour.

Articles reporting on the killings and the reactions are easy enough to find, but here is one article that attempts to look at the racial issue from a broader perspective. The author, Ta-Nehisi Coates, is fairly well-known for his in-depth analysis of racial discrimination, and his other articles, while very long and arguably biased, are thought-provoking and well-argued.
